I grew up listening to music on vinyl records, 33 1/3s, 45s were largely before my time. Saved my money when I wanted something, snagged a ride to the mall, spent hours wandering around Sam Goody or some other brick and mortar store and then came home to listen to my prized possessions….

On Saturday night I participated in my first Status race. Before Saturday night a Status Race had never existed and I’m calling it that so no one get worried that they are missing out on something.
I was at a back yard barbeque with a few buddies of mine prior to us going out on the town that night. We had been having a few beers and I made the statement “I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty lit up right now.” The group had a laugh and one of my friends said that “had Facebook Status written all over it.” Another said we should all post it as our statuses so the bar crowd we were about to enter would be ready for our arrival. My gears started cranking, “slowly of course I had been partying for a few hours at this point” and the status race was born. We all posted the same status simultaneously the person with the least “likes” and “comments” would be the loser and would buy a round of shots at midnight. This was a funny test of our social circles, I was well aware that my network was much larger than all but one of my competitors so I worried not about my chances of being the kloutless chump at the end of the night.
The night progressed and as we watched likes and comments roll in throughout the night we saw fast who would be safe and who would be on the line for the drinks at midnight. One of the three who was on the slow end asked me how the hell I had progressed ahead of him so fast. I immediately started explaining “Facebook’s Edge Rank” to the group, which for about five minutes kept their interest until they got bored and started making fun of my vast interest in the topic.
The night ended with my friend Tony being on the line for the round. A victory for the social savvy social marketer and the birth of the status race. I’m gonna try to convince some more friends to do this, mostly because my network is awesome about responding to my posts and I don’t foresee me losing one of these any time soon.
Party on Party people and let the Status Race begin.
